It is challenging to blog. I have to wait for it to come. Contemplate the session after I decompress from it. (Usually takes a couple bottles of beer for that to happen). What came from it other than pictures? There is always something more. I know my fellow photographer friends know what I am talking about. What came from this session was for me. These kids are GORGEOUS, without a doubt, so it was easy as pie to jump in and go for it.

I am allowed to toot my own horn right? and say that I am really happy with my work right now. Sure I will look back in a year and say, “Gosh those pictures are horrible,” like I do with pictures taken last year, but for now, contentment is mine. My inner eye is confident.

I am at a point where I don’t care if something is technically right or not. I don’t care about the rules anymore. I get all of that. I can take a picture straight out of the camera and be confident it is a proper exposure. The shots that make you stop and look again are the ones that matter and sometimes those are not “right.” If the focus falls somewhere else, but it makes me stop and wonder, it’s a good shot.

I played with dramatic lighting on this day. Dramatic “natural” lighting. I love shadows and depth, so these days I am following my bliss with it. Last year that wouldn’t have happened. Inner eye. Inner eye.

Blah blah blah….. here are the cutie pies. So cute in fact I put them on my splash page. Thanks Maddie and Abram for being who you are and for allowing me to learn and keep it real!

Been bitten by back-light too. Oooooh so pretty.

Focus fell on the nose, but do I care? Nope. Her nose is cute and a main reason her face is her face.

Can you feel the freedom in her laugh? Oh I can.

He has the same nose!!! I could eat him.

Can you feel it??? I don’t know what it is but this shot makes me shiver.

Think I Will Call Him Tippy

My great-nephew came into our world two weeks ago and I have to say that makes me extremely happy and also extremely freaked-out. I am a great-aunt!!!!!!!!! Which means I may be getting old. Anyway, he is cute, he is cool, he is awesome! I love you lil boy, can’t wait to get to know ya better.

Yep, I did the basket thing. Not my thing, but I did it anyway.

And I like it.

I didn’t know if I could get through taking his pictures without breaking down, but I did. I have known this young man since the day he was born. I spent most of my first pregnancy taking care of him everyday. I love him like he is my own. This was emotional for me for several reasons. He lost his dad two years ago as the result of a terribly tragic car accident. A HUGE loss. Thank God we have Zachary. David lives in him. There were moments when I could see David and hear his giggle. Something I had forgotten. I am very proud of this young man, he has been through so much. He is strong, agile, smart, kind, sensitive, gifted, a dare-devil. On this day he parallel parked for the first time. I was amazed, it was perfect! Had a blast with him.

Z- you have the whole world at your feet. You can do and be ANYTHING you want to be. Take advantage of your God given freedom and fly.

They Grow Like Weeds…..

and if you have been following this little one, you will see it is true. She is unstoppable. Doing so much that is not typical for six months. No big surprise at all, this is the way she has been since birth. Curious, strong-willed, smart, friendly, sure of herself. And I feel that she knows who I am now, which is of great benefit to me. She looks right at the lens and listens to my voice. We have made a “connection,” something that is crucial to great photographs.

The most important part of this was great grandmother being there for a visit. Not planned. And at the end of the “real” pictures, I took some very precious shots. She is a beautiful woman and I can tell she was quite the looker in her younger days. I miss my grandmothers so being around her was a treat.

The best shots always come at the end, just the way it goes.

God-thank you for allowing me to do this. It brings me pure JOY.

We were going to head down to the Second Street bridge but lightening isn’t something to mess with, so we stayed here. Tons of options and little bit o’ breaking the law. I don’t think we were supposed to bypass the gate to get to the graffiti but we did it anyway. Whatever I have to do to get what I want is usually the path I take.

Here’s Hunter. A VERY cool kid with beautiful teeth. Not bad looking either. He has good genes.

Hunter- I had a great time and I am so glad I was able to take your senior pictures. You are a great kid and I am glad to know ya.

That’s all I have to say about that.

Driver

Yep! He passed his permit test and is now a driver. Going into his Junior year of high school too. Exciting! My first born is growing up. Not upset though. Unlike my feelings right now about my daughter going into Kindergarten, I am excited about his future and revel in his maturity. I no longer look at pictures of him as a baby and cry, but rather see him as a young man and love the fact I can watch the fruits of my labor in action. He is a funny, kind-hearted boy. I was practically a baby when I had him. Sometimes people think we are brother and sister and sometimes we act like it too. This is his very first drive, on two-lane highways and all. He did great by the way.

Proud of you Bub! You are an awesome human being.

A Family Affair

Families, I have realized are where it’s at for me. I love families and the interaction they have together, in their comfort zone. Happiness, aggravation, laughter, tension, exhaustion, emotions, smiles, jokes, sarcasm, honesty- all of the things that make a family a family. The wonderful thing about a family is the ability to be yourself but still be loved and accepted unconditionally, no matter what your issues are. Blood is thicker than water ya know.

Being a part of other families makes me happy and helps me realize how important mine is. I appreciate SO very much the effort my dad made through the years to have his camera at all times. And for the efforts of all my family members. Even back in the 30′s, 40′s and 50′s. They left memories for me to hold on to and have allowed me to be a part of the past. Only photographs can do that.

One day this family will look back on these photographs and be so thankful they put the effort into making this happen. Although it’s stressful, it’s absolutely necessary. Priceless!
